Family Secrets Uncovered!

Many researchers begin their "roots" search hoping to find they connect to rich and/or famous families in the past and quite a number of them find such a connection. My paternal Lisle line connects to the famous Daniel Tucker. The song, "Ole Dan Tucker", was written and sung by the slaves he befriended. I am quite proud to know my family descends from such an admired and respected person. My maternal 4th Great Grandmother is the daughter of Revolutionary War Veteran Charles Holland.

However, there are also a vast number of "black sheep" or "closet skeletons" that families wish were not there. These family secrets make it extremely difficult to locate lost relatives.

Many times, even in the 20th century, children were "adopted" by family members and raised as their own. In many cases, there is no official record as to the birth parents. My GrandFather Ferguson is such a case. My GrandMother and other family members remember being told that he was adopted at the age of 2 by my GGrandparents. I can find no record telling me if he was originally a Ferguson or if he assumed the last name of his adoptive parents. It is also rumored that he was a member of the Chicago "mob" before 1917 when my Mother was born. At 3 months of age, he packed up the family and moved back to Mississippi. He supported his family by share-cropping a large parcel of land until his death in 1925. I will probably never find the truth.

At this point in my research, I've not uncovered any mass murderers, ladies of the night, or horse thieves in our family but if I do, they will be researched and covered just like the others.

If you think you have a black sheep or skeleton in your family tree, you may need to dig deep to discover the full story. If you know where his/her past indiscretions took place, you should first check all county court records for criminal judgments. You can also check databases for prisoners in most states.
