Maybelline
If you are a pet lover then at some time or other you have experienced the grief of losing your beloved friend. I have been through this many times during my life and I remember every event as though it were yesterday. When I was about 13, our family dog, a mutt named Pokey, was run over by a car. I remember my Father sitting on the curb crying (he was not ashamed - he loved Pokey). My Mother was so upset she could barely go to work. It was a very traumatic day for everyone and the sadness lasted a long time. Several years later, my Mother adopted another dog and named him Pokey too. He was a member of the family for many years and when he passed away, my Mother had a ceremony for him at a pet cemetery. He had a beautiful floral arrangement on his casket and his picture sat on my mother's night stand until she died. My husband and I were given a pomeranian as a wedding present. His name was Lordy and he went everywhere with the family. He was a member of our family from the first day and when he died 15 years later, I was so upset that I had to leave work. My husband picked him up at the vet so we could give him a proper burial and cried all the way home. He was buried on our place and a headstone was ordered and placed over his grave. In 1991, my Mother lost Nicholas (a beautiful Lhasa) to old age and he was buried next to Lordy with a headstone placed over his grave too. Only one year later, my sister's Misty (an adorable shih tzu) died from cancer and now lies next to the others. In 2001, I had a beautiful great white pyrenees male that developed a bone disorder and lost the use of his left rear leg. One day I found him outside his kennel dead. He was only 2 years old but the stress had been too much for him. I buried him on our place with the others. When we sold our place last year, the new owner promised to never disturb their graves. It was very hard to leave them there but in the end, I picked up the headstones and carried them to our new home for a memorial garden dedicated to our lost family. So, why is this piece named Maybelline? Because last month, we lost Maybelline to a freak medical problem. Maybelline was a Great White Pyrenees female. My husband named her Maybelline because she looked like black mascara had been applied to her eyelashes and they really stood out in her white coat of hair. She had given us several puppies to love and we had placed all of them in loving homes. If you have never had a pyrenees as a pet, you are missing out on the most loving and gentle four legged friend anyone could ever have. In the 6 years she was with us, she never growled or snapped at anyone. Not even the great grandchildren that loved to try to ride her or pulled on her tail or crawled over her on the ground. She was an absolute joy. She took care of everyone. It was not unusual to see our cats curled up in her stomach sleeping. She always checked them out to be sure they were alright. I will miss her forever. I truly believe that all of our pets are in God's hands. After all, he created them.

The hardest thing about having four-legged family members is that every now and then you lose them. But in your case at least you had closure. Several of my cats have simply vanished, even though I relocated to a mountain estate in a remote rural area specifically so that none would get run over. Apparently they were taken by pythons.
