What Does It Take To Get A Correct Medical Diagnosis?

I am writing this intel to make everyone aware of the importance of second and even third opinions from the medical community. My daughter-in-law has been suffering for 8 years with extreme stomach and intestinal pain. She has been to numerous gastroenterologists, all highly recommended, has undergone every test that could be scheduled, from the upper GI, lower GI, at least 6 colonoscopies, CT scans, and technicians and doctors have examined the interior of her stomach and intestinal tract again and again. She has been prescribed one medication after another and each time the doctors have told her that stress is probably causing all of the pain and a couple hinted that she needed counseling.

The week before Christmas 2007, the pain was so severe that she was taken to the emergency room. After yet another round of test in the emergency room, the doctor found that her colon had collapsed and was creating a blockage. Emergency surgery was performed and 10" of her colon was removed. Upon examination of the removed section, the doctor advised that for some "unknown" reason, her colon had become necrotic, meaning that the tissue had died. When asked what would cause this to happen the doctor appeared unconcerned and stated that it sometimes just happens and that she probably would not have any additional problems.

A few weeks later, after she stopped taking pain medication for the post surgery pain, she realized that the previous cramping and aching was still present as well as the bouts of diarrhea. During her post surgery visits to her doctor, he had no explanation for the collapse and continued to question her about the number of aspirins she took daily to which she always responded that she does not take aspirin ever.

At this time, she decided to try another highly recommended physician who was amazed that she could have so much pain, a collapsed colon found to be necrotic and no one was making a concerted effort to discover the underlying cause. He advised her that he would not stop until he located the problem. She began another round of testing.

An indication that she may have a heart issue initiated further tests by a cardiologist who discovered a blood clot located in the area around her heart. She began taking Coumadin (a blood thinner) to prevent additional clots and hopefully dissolve the one found.

The next tests were requested by a Vascular specialist who discovered the total blockage of two collateral arteries from the aorta to the liver, spleen, stomach, intestines, and colon. The results were sent to a surgeon who ordered surgery immediately.

The surgery was successful and the doctor advised that my daughter-in-law was literally living on the edge of a knife and could have died at any time. The surgery procedure involved a 12cm arterial graft below the diaghram with two collateral arteries taking blood to the areas in need. She is still in ICU at this writing but the doctor feels she should have a complete recovery and be able to enjoy life again.

The number of doctors who examined her over the 8 years is extensive but not one of them connected the classic systems with Ischemic Colitis. Only my daughter-in-laws pain and persistence at finding a real diagnosis saved her life. It is proof that you should hold your own counsel when it comes to your health. If what a doctor tells you does not feel right, then seek another opinion until your intuition is satisfied.
